The Moroccan Atlas

Morocco can be divided in two parts, the rather green North, a great part of which is covered by the Atlas mountains and the desert, South of the Atlas.
The Atlas is made of three different ranges : the Middle-Atlas which culminates at an elevation of 3200 m in the North-Eastern part of Morocco, South of Fez, the High-Atlas which reach an elevation of nearly de 4200 m at Mount Toubkal South of Marrakech and the Anti-Atlas which speadss between Ouarzazate and the plain of Souss at the South of Agadir.
This natural heritage is a great chance for the Moroccan biodiversity which benefits from a wide variety of climates and geographical conditions which gave birth to many endemic species.
The Atlas offers harmonious and breathtaking landscapes, shaped by men and nature in a fragile balance. Proctecting the Atlas mountain is complex, but it is a must because without the biodiversity of the Atlas mountains Morocco would lose much of its identity.

Developing the demand for organic farm products can be an excellent way to ensure sustainable development and to keep the biodiversity in rural mountain regions. For exemple some honey cooperative farms such as the "honey cooperatives of Bouiblan and el Khayn" produce high quality natural and medicinal honey from a large variety of wild plants and flowers like thym, rosmary or "buplerum spinosum", an endemic pant of the Middle Atlas. Protecting the biodiversity means being able to continue to roduce high quality honey.
